German Accordions in Cajun Country
[edit]I removed the line about German settlers introducing the accordion to Cajun culture, which lacked a citation to support it. I'm researching this now so it caught my eye. Malcolm Comeaux wrote, "It will probably never be known when the first accordion came to Louisiana, or when the first Cajun acquired or played one, nor does it really matter." [1] That said, Comeaux goes on the detail how Cajuns were quite faithful to the fiddle until the late 1800s. Comeaux cites Rocky Sexton's research that the accordion did not eclipse the fiddle in Cajun music until the 1920s. [2] Comeaux includes a discussion of possible German influence (the "Cajun" accordion is of course a German style instrument), but there is more evidence of Black Creole influence on accordion playing in Cajun music than any other source. This topic should I guess go onto the Cajun Accordion page if it is to be expanded.
